Now seen as the male version of the Rose of Tralee it started back in 1989 in Clonbur, Co Galway, the Festival has found itself in many towns and villages throughout Ireland in it's search to find this unique Phenomenon which exists among us "The Culchie" or the Village Character as he was known years ago. The true Culchie has the ability to entertain at will, whether on stage or TV. So whether you are a Politician (in the making), a Nuclear Scientist, a Technician, an Engineer or a Farmer - at the Culchie Festival you will always find your niche.

What does 'CULCHIE' mean?
|
|
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a Culchie as:
"One who lives in, or comes from, a rural area; a (simple) countryman (or woman), a provincial, a rustic."
|
The term here in Ireland is often a derogatory one used by those living in the capital (Dublin) for anyone who lives "outside of the pale" or "down the country"
|
The rules for participation in the
"Culchie Festival" are straight forward and simple.
| 1. |
No Dubs allowed to enter. |
| 2. |
No Women allowed to enter |
| 3. |
Contestants can be married or
single, age 21 or over. |
| 4. |
It would definitely be considered
an asset if you were able to entertain at will, at any time of the day
or night, with a story, song, musical instrument or a dance or just
be a general character |
