Press Release:
Overseas Bikes to
Feature for the first time at this years Honda Step-Thru Run

Phil Turner (left), Malc Wheeler and Rod Gibson get
geared up for the great Honda step-thru run.
For the last few years the folks
behind Ireland's Culchie Festival have been organising a gathering
of Honda step-thrus each October. Last year almost 500 bikes
turned up, and won the event a place in the Guinness Book of
Records. This year three intrepid editors from Mortons Media Group
will be making the long distance trek from Lincolnshire to
Southern Ireland to join the festival, aboard two ageing step-thrus
and an ST70 Dax. The trip will be raising money for the Lymphoma
Association.
Phil
Turner, editor of Motorcycle Sport and Leisure, said "I've never
ridden a C70, 50 or 90 before, I'm sure I'll be used to it after
400 miles! I'm delighted to be able to do my bit to help the
Lymphoma Association and as crazy as it sounds, I'm actually
really looking forward to the ride."
Malcolm Wheeler is editor of Classic Racer, and will be riding the
1974 Honda ST70 he formerly used as a pit bike on the Isle of Man.
“I’ve done some daft things in almost 35 years of motorcycling but
riding my ST70 from Lincolnshire to Ireland must rank amongst the
daftest,” he said.
The third bike will be a borrowed C90 ridden by Classic Motorcycle
Mechanics editor Rod Gibson. "One of our readers suggested it was
a good idea and I agreed, so I guess it's my fault. Now the other
lads have come on board I can't chicken out!"
The intrepid trio plan to leave the Mortons offices on October 22
and make two overnight stops before arriving at Cavan for the
festival on the weekend of October 25-26. If you'd like to sponsor
the riders more details are on the website at
www.longwayover.org.uk
, and you can meet the trio at various events throughout the
summer including the Stafford Shows in April and October.

Alzheimer
Society of Ireland (Cavan Branch)
I wish to acknowledge the generous invitation, to be
associated with
the Honda Step-Thru Bike Run to be held in Kilnaleck in 2008.
We in the
Alzheimer Society are delighted to be a joint recipient with
The Cystis
Fibrosis Association Of Ireland (Cavan Branch) and any monies
received will
be used exclusively for the Cavan day service based in Cavan
town.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is a national voluntary body
with
charitable status and it provides a variety of services across
the country.
In Cavan at present there is a day service each Friday
operated from
Catherdral Road and we operate a transport service for those
who have no
means of attending. There are about eighteen people in receipt
of service at
any given time and families are delighted with the respite for
several hours
that such a servcie provides. We also provide a fledging home
support
service to some families and we are constantly trying to
expand this service
if the funding is available. The HSE supports the day service
to the extent
of circa 27-30% which is the lowest in the country. Elsewhere
the level of
support avergaes about 70% \The deficitsd are met through
fundraising by our
volunteers and donations made by members of the public or
organizations such
as yours. As you can see we are particularly in need of the
support in Cavan
as envisaged by the Honda Bike Run.
Thank you once again for your support for this worthy cause.
Yours sincerely.

North East and Midlands Region, No. 8, Railway Road.

"I LOVE YOU .IE TO FIND
ESCORTS FOR CULCHIES"
The organisers of Culchie Festival 2006 can now breath a sigh of
relief as the task of selecting the female escorts to look after
this select band of Irish manhood for four days has been lifted from
their already burdened shoulders with the announcement of the
arrival of the Iloveyou.ie team who will now take on this mission
for the Festival
The experienced team headed up by Caroline Fleming and Paula Mc
Mahon will leave no stone unturned they say as they sift through
their endless array of delectful possibilities which they have on
file. However so as not to let anything slip through the net and
upset the culchies they will be assisted in their mission by The
Irish Mirror
If you feel you should be one of this elite group of women then the
I love you .ie team want to hear from you. All you have to do next
is to e-mail info@iloveyou.ie
or call Paula or Caroline on 041 983 5705 and a application form
will be sent you in the post |

What does 'CULCHIE' mean? |
|
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a Culchie as :
"One who lives in, or comes from, a rural area; a (simple) countryman (or woman), a provincial, a rustic."
|
The term here in Ireland is often a derogatory one used by those living in the capital (Dublin) for anyone who lives "outside of the pale" or "down the country" |

It would definitely be considered
an asset if you were able to entertain at will, at any time of the day
or night, with a story, song, musical instrument or a dance or just
be a general character |
Now seen as the male version of the Rose of Tralee.
It started back in 1989 in
Clonbur, County Galway.
The Festival has found itself in many towns and villages throughout Ireland in it's search to find this unique Phenomenon which exists among us "The Culchie" or the Village Character as he was known years ago.
The true Culchie has the ability to entertain at will, whether on stage or TV. So whether you are a Politician (in the making), a Nuclear Scientist, a Technician, an Engineer or a Farmer - at the Culchie Festival you will always find your niche.
